Many new cars now have keyless entry systems, or can have them added as an automotive upgrade. This allows the owner/driver to open and start the car without using a button or turning a key so long as the fob is within a certain vicinity.

Unfortunately thieves are cashing in on this, using sophisticated technology, easily purchased online. A relay attack usually requires two thieves for it to be carried out. The first thief carries the "Key Reader" which is usually on a laptop, hidden in a bag, whilst following you from a careful distcance which is just close enough for his reader to read the security info of your key fob. His acomplas is waiting next to your vehicle and holding another tool set to receive the information and unlock the vehicle.

Once the vehicle is unlocked, he is then able to jump into the car and start it using the same security information and within 30 seconds your car could be driving away from where you last parked it.

The same method is used for stealing cars from victim's own driveways. If the key is left close enough to the front door or in the garage, the key reader is able to retrieve security info from outside the front door.
