A CAN-bus immobiliser integrates directly into a vehicle's Controller Area Network to prevent engine start at the software level — unlike basic wire-cut immobilisers that can be bypassed by finding and bridging the cut wire.
CAN-bus stands for Controller Area Network Bus — the internal communication network used in virtually every modern vehicle to allow the ECU, BCM, instrument cluster, transmission control unit and other modules to communicate. A CAN-bus immobiliser integrates into this network and interrupts the start sequence at the software level, preventing the engine from starting without authorisation.
Traditional aftermarket immobilisers work by cutting a physical wire — typically the starter motor wire or fuel pump relay. While this provides some protection, experienced thieves can bypass wire-cut immobilisers by locating and bridging the cut wire, often within minutes of gaining access to the engine bay or fuse box.
